Psalms 133:1 – “Behold,
how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity.”
I
went to church this morning in prison and God spoke to me about a few different
things. While we were singing and praising, goose bumps began to rise up on my
skin and tears filled my eyes. God’s Holy Spirit was all over me. I had a smile
on my face that I could not hide. I wished that every day of my life could
start out in a room filled with guys like that singing songs like we sang for
the God that we serve. I can only imagine what it will be like when we all get
to stand before the Father and worship and praise together as one! Words can’t
describe the feeling that we all will have when that day comes. I only thought
I had been to church until I came to prison and went to church. There is
something about standing in a room full of men “rockin the house” that no shot of dope could ever compare to. That comes from someone who has lived it all and
I know today that the only regret I will have about leaving prison is not being
able to get back in to come to church.
We
were in a room full of sinners, all colors, all backgrounds. As I looked across
the room, I began to analyze people. I noticed some had tattoos that covered
their bodies, some were rough looking, and some had battle scars. One man very
obviously had his throat cut at one point in his life. Some I noticed from the
gym or the yard, even my wing. Some had money, some didn’t; some had an
education, some street smarts. All were in gray and all were praising God. It
was the most amazing worship service I’ve ever been to and I won’t miss another
while I’m here!
After
the praise, several inmates got up and shared some amazing testimonies, their
hopes and dreams and I recognized that God is an amazing God and I felt
privileged to be in prison on this day. I wonder how many blessing in my life I
have missed out on because I slept in, didn’t do a quiet time, or didn’t choose
to read, pray, turn from sin, and surround myself with people doing the same! I
recognize that the more I can do these things and involve God in my life, the
easier it will be for me to have the faith and ability to stand the tests that
the world throws my way. If you never show up at the barber you’re likely never
to get a haircut. Likewise, if you never seek God and go to church, you’ll
never find the peace that I am feeling right now and never know what I’m
talking about!
Prayer: Father
God, thanks for making it possible for men with differences, fears,
insecurities, and all kinds of issues in life to come together as one and be
united. That is what makes your love so amazing.
Thoughts: With the love
of God in our lives, we can see what it truly means to be united and to be a
family.
